New York 1981 Being a great lover of fairy tales, I am always enthralled when I plunge into this wonder world of mobile metal living rooms with the most wondrous pictures parading in front of my camera. I can watch unabashed all the people sitting opposite, pressed together, as I observe and capture the vast human menagerie of the metropolis. Never before have I felt such freedom, freedom to let myself go, and even such equality as in the cars of the New York subway. In the years I spent riding the subway, New Yorkers called their transport system hell on wheels. Why they did so was always a mystery to me since I felt basically safe and sheltered; frequent and violent incidents happen in equal measure on the street.  Über die Formbarkeit der menschlichen Existenz durch Architektur. Architektur ist für mich mehr als nur die Gestaltung von Gebäuden. Sie ist eine Kraft, die unsere Welt auf vielfältige Weise prägt. Ich möchte mit meinem Portfolio die Emotionen und Erfahrungen vermitteln, die wir mit Architektur verbinden. Ich möchte zeigen, wie sie eine Kraft des Wandels sein kann.
Architektur prägt die menschliche Existenz in vielerlei Hinsicht. Sie ist eine Demonstration von Macht. Nähert man sich dem architektonischen Erscheinungsbild der Macht, so wird hinter der ästhetisierenden Betrachtung und dem formschönen Design ein Bestreben sichtbar, das im Kern auf nichts Geringeres als die Disziplinierung und Formung der menschlichen Existenz abzielt. Wenn wir uns der Architektur bewusster werden, können wir ihre Bedeutung besser verstehen. Architektur kann kulturelle Größe zeigen, indem sie interessant, imposant und erhaben ist. Sie kann auch die Stärke und Macht eines Regimes demonstrieren.
Solche Gebäude können Angst einflößen und Unterwerfung fordern. Architektur beeinflusst unsere Gefühle. Wir spüren den Raum mit unserem Körper. Wir erfahren den Raum mit den Augen unserer Haut.
Eine mächtige Gestaltungskraft, mit denen Architektur unsere Gefühle beeinflussen kann, ist die Schönheit.
Schönheit kann uns ein Gefühl von Verbundenheit vermitteln da es uns mit etwas Größerem als uns selbst verbindet.
In der heutigen Architektur ist die Schönheit nicht nur schwer zu finden, sondern auch weitgehend verschwunden.
Ich glaube jedoch, dass Architektur nicht nur schön oder hässlich ist. Sie kann uns auch ein Gefühl von Wunder, Schönheit und Frieden näher bringen.
Wir fühlen uns nur in uns umgebenden Raum wohl. Eine geschützte Wohnung, geprägt von der eigenen Identität, im geschaffenen Raum der verdichteten Urbanität.
Nicht in dem grenzenlosen Universum, das wir am nächtlichen Sternenhimmel sehen. Architektur ist nicht nur eine Ansammlung von Gebäuden, die als schön oder unansehnlich, gelungen oder fragwürdig zu beurteilen sind. Wie die Literatur und der Film erzählt auch die Architektur zeitliche Geschichten, wenn auch mit unterschiedlichen Intentionen.
